In this weekend’s Gospel, Jesus begins the discourse by hinting at a great mystery: “Do not labour for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you…” When the Jews tell Jesus that Moses had given them the bread of heaven, Jesus replies that it was not Moses, but his Father who had given them the true bread from heaven. Jesus tells the Jews that the manna in the desert was not the true bread from heaven since those who ate of it did die. He says that his Father will give them the true bread from heaven. They respond, ‘Lord, give us this bread always.’ Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to me shall not hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst.”Our Lord leaves no room for doubt that this bread is a reality. He repeats the verb “to eat” eight times. Christ will become food so that we might gain a new life, the life which He has brought to us: “The bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh. This is not a bread from the earth. It is a bread which came down from heaven, not such as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live forever.”Let’s think about this for a moment. When we receive Holy Communion, we receive Christ himself with his Body, his Blood, his Soul and his Divinity. He gives himself to us in an intimate union which binds us to him in a real way. Our life is transformed into his life. In Holy Communion Christ is not only God with us, but God in us. After we receive Holy Communion, Christ is truly, really, substantially present in our soul. Christ gives us his life! He divinizes us! He transforms us into himself! The infinite merits of the Passion are poured out into our soul. He sends us strength and consolation. He leads us to his Most Sacred Heart, to transform our sentiments into his sentiments. The Most Holy Eucharist holds all the graces and fruits of eternal life for humanity and for each individual soul. This is because this Sacrament contains all the spiritual good of the Church (Second Vatican Council, Decree, Presbyterorum ordinis, 5). If we frequently consider the effects which this Sacrament can have on the soul we will come to treasure Holy Communion. We will see the value of receiving our Lord as often as we can, on a daily basis if possible. We will prepare ourselves well for each Holy Communion before Mass and remain in church in silent thanksgiving after each reception of Our Blessed Lord, our Greatest Love. When we can’t go to Mass and receive Him in Holy Communion, we will receive Him in Spiritual Holy Communion in a special moment of our daily prayer. The soul will be raised to a supernatural plane. Christ’s virtues will vivify it. Then we will be able to say with confidence, “It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.”Those words of the Lord during the Last Supper are also fulfilled with every Holy Communion: “If a man loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him”(John 14: 23). The soul becomes the temple and tabernacle of the Most Holy Trinity. The life of the three Divine Persons will transform it, nurturing in it the divine seed that was implanted in Baptism. When we draw near to receive him we should say, Lord, I hope in you. I adore you, I love you, increase my faith. And now, let us go to the Blessed Virgin Mary. For thirty-three years she was in his physical presence. She treated him with the greatest respect and love imaginable. Let us unite ourselves to her sentiments of adoration and love as we continue our preparation to receive our Blessed Lord in Holy Communion today. Amen.

En el Evangelio de este fin de semana, Jesús comienza el discurso insinuando un gran misterio: “No trabajéis por el alimento que perece, sino por el alimento que permanece para la vida eterna, que el Hijo del Hombre os dará …” Cuando los judíos le dicen a Jesús que Moisés les había dado el pan del cielo, Jesús responde que no fue Moisés, sino su Padre, quien les dio el verdadero pan del cielo. Jesús les dice a los judíos que el maná en el desierto no era el verdadero pan del cielo ya que los que comían de él murieron. Dice que su Padre les dará el verdadero pan del cielo. Ellos responden: “Señor, danos este pan siempre”. Jesús les dijo: “Yo soy el pan de vida; el que a mí viene, no tendrá hambre, y el que en mí cree, no tendrá sed jamás ”. “ Nuestro Señor no deja lugar a dudas de que este pan es una realidad. Repite el verbo “comer” ocho veces. Cristo se convertirá en alimento para que ganemos una vida nueva, la vida que Él nos ha traído: “El pan que daré por la vida del mundo es mi carne. Este no es un pan de la tierra. Es un pan que descendió del cielo, no como el que los pdres comieron y murieron; el que come de este pan vivirá para siempre ”. Pensemos en esto por un momento. Cuando recibimos la Sagrada Comunión, recibimos a Cristo mismo con su Cuerpo, su Sangre, su Alma y su Divinidad. Se entrega a nosotros en una unión íntima que nos une a él de manera real. Nuestra vida se transforma en su vida. En la Santa Comunión, Cristo no es solo Dios con nosotros, sino Dios en nosotros. Después de recibir la Sagrada Comunión, Cristo está verdadera, realmente, sustancialmente presente en nuestra alma. ¡Cristo nos da su vida! ¡Nos diviniza! ¡Nos transforma en sí mismo! Los méritos infinitos de la Pasión se derraman en nuestra alma y nos envía fuerza y consuelo. Nos conduce a su Sacratísimo Corazón, para transformar nuestros sentimientos en sentimientos suyos. La Santísima Eucaristía contiene todas las gracias y frutos de la vida eterna para la humanidad y para cada alma individual. Esto se debe a que este Sacramento contiene todo el bien espiritual de la Iglesia (Concilio Vaticano II, Decreto, Presbyterorum ordinis, 5). Si consideramos con frecuencia los efectos que este Sacramento puede tener en el alma, llegaremos a atesorar la Sagrada Comunión. Veremos el valor de recibir a nuestro Señor tan a menudo como podamos, a diario si es posible. Nos prepararemos bien para cada Santa Comunión antes de la Misa y permaneceremos en la iglesia en acción de gracias silenciosa después de cada recepción de Nuestro Bendito Señor, nuestro Mayor Amor. Cuando no podamos ir a Misa y recibirlo en la Sagrada Comunión, lo recibiremos en la Sagrada Comunión espiritual en un momento especial de nuestra oración diaria. El alma se elevará a un plano sobrenatural. Las virtudes de Cristo lo vivificarán. Entonces podremos decir con confianza: “Ya no soy yo quien vive, sino Cristo quien vive en mí”. Esas palabras del Señor durante la Última Cena también se cumplen con cada Santa Comunión: “Si un hombre me ama, cumplirá mi palabra, y mi Padre lo amará, e iremos a él y haremos nuestro hogar con él”. (Juan 14:23). El alma se convierte en templo y tabernáculo de la Santísima Trinidad. La vida de las tres Divinas Personas la transformará, nutriendo en ella la semilla divina que fue implantada en el Bautismo. Cuando nos acerquemos para recibirlo, debemos decir: Señor, en ti espero, te adoro, te amo, aumenta mi fe. Y ahora, vayamos a la Santísima Virgen María. Durante treinta y tres años estuvo en su presencia física. Ella lo trató con el mayor respeto y amor imaginables. Unámonos a sus sentimientos de adoración y amor mientras continuamos nuestra preparación para recibir a nuestro Bendito Señor en la Sagrada Comunión hoy. Amén.
