Fourth Sunday of Lent

Here is another reflection from our Lenten Daily Readings from Saturday of the 3rd Week of Lent from the books: Hosea 6:1-6; Luke 18:9-14

Today, Hosea stresses the importance of sincere religious service to God. The piety of the people of God has been like the dew which so quickly passes away at the beginning of the day. They had not been sufficiently steadfast. They had gone through the motions of sacrifice, but they had not given their minds and hearts to God.

The parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector illustrates this point.

The proud Pharisee, despite his external practices, is not truly religious. The humble tax collector is closer to true religion. He realizes how much he needs the help of God.

It does not matter how much we accomplish in this world—even working for the Church—if in the process we lose sight of our relationship with God.

The tax collector thought that his relationship with God was poor because he saw himself as a sinner. Regardless, he kept up the relationship day in and day out.

Perhaps the Pharisee also thought that his relationship to God was poor for good periods of time, but basically, his relationship was not to the true God but to one of his own making. We need to see ourselves as we truly are, look to God for mercy, and persevere in that attitude for a lifetime.

Dear Lord, grant us a humble, contrite heart. You know our misery. We offer you the misery of our sinfulness so that you can purify it and do with it as you will. We do not want to live our lives merely avoiding the big sins. We want to have a deep and intimate relationship with you founded on substantial humility. Amen.

Aquí tenemos otra reflexión de nuestras Lecturas diarias de Cuaresma del sábado de la 3ª semana de Cuaresma de los libros: 6: Hosea 1-6; Lucas 18: 9-14.

Hoy, Oseas enfatiza la importancia del servicio religioso sincero a Dios. La piedad del pueblo de Dios ha sido como el rocío que tan rápidamente desaparece al comienzo del día. No habían sido lo suficientemente firmes. Habían pasado por los movimientos de sacrificio, pero no habían entregado sus mentes y corazones a Dios.

La parábola del fariseo y el recaudador de impuestos ilustra este punto.

El orgulloso fariseo, a pesar de sus prácticas externas, no es verdaderamente religioso. El humilde recaudador de impuestos está más cerca de la religión verdadera. Se da cuenta de lo mucho que necesita la ayuda de Dios.

No importa cuánto logremos en este mundo, incluso trabajando para la Iglesia, si en el proceso perdemos de vista nuestra relación con Dios.

El recaudador de impuestos pensó que su relación con Dios era pobre porque se veía a sí mismo como un pecador. De todos modos, mantuvo la relación día tras día.

Tal vez el fariseo también pensó que su relación con Dios era pobre durante largos períodos de tiempo, pero básicamente su relación no era con el verdadero Dios sino con uno que él mismo había creado. Necesitamos vernos a nosotros mismos como realmente somos, mirar a Dios por misericordia y perseverar en esa actitud durante toda la vida.

Querido Señor, concédenos un corazón humilde y arrepentido. Tú conoces nuestra miseria por eso te ofrecemos la miseria de nuestra pecaminosidad para que puedas purificarla y hacer con ella lo que quieras. No queremos vivir nuestras vidas simplemente evitando los grandes pecados. Queremos tener una relación profunda e íntima con usted fundada en una humildad sustancial. Amén.
