We have gone, step by step, in the course of the liturgical year, from the consideration of the mysteries of the life of Jesus to the contemplation of the Most Blessed Trinity, whose feast we celebrated last Sunday. Jesus, our Mediator, our Way, has taken us by the hand and led us to the Most Holy Trinity; and today it seems as though the three Divine Persons Themselves wish to take us back to Jesus, considered in His Most Holy Eucharist. “No man comes to the Father but by Me” (John 14,6), Jesus said, and He added, “No man can come to Me except the Father… draw him” (ibid. 6,44). This is the journey of the Christian soul: from Jesus to the Father, to the Most Holy Trinity; from the Most Holy Trinity, from the Father, to Jesus. A Christian cannot do without Christ; He is, in the strictest sense of the word, our Pontiff, the great Bridge-builder who has spanned the abyss between God and us. At the end of the Easter Season in which we commemorate the mysteries of the Savior, the Church, who like a good Mother knows that our spiritual life cannot subsist without Jesus, leads us to Him, really and truly present in the Most Holy Sacrament of the altar. The solemnity of the Corpus Domini is not just the simple memorial of an historical event which took place over two thousand years ago at the Last Supper; rather, it recalls us to the ever-present reality of Jesus always living in our midst. We can say, in truth, that He has not “left us orphans,” but has willed to remain permanently with us, in the integrity of His Person in the fullness of His humanity and His divinity. “There is no other nation so great,” the Divine Office enthusiastically sings, “as to have its gods so near as our God is present to us” (RB). In the Most Holy Eucharist, Jesus is really Emmanuel, God with us.

O God, O Creator, O Spirit of life overwhelming Your creatures with ever new graces! You grant to Your chosen ones the gift which is ever renewed: the Body and Blood, the Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ!O Jesus, You instituted this Sacrament, not through any desire to draw some advantage from it for Yourself, but solely moved by a love which has no other measure than to be without measure. You instituted this Sacrament because Your love exceeds all words. Burning with love for us, You desired to give Yourself to us and took up Your dwelling in the consecrated Host, entirely and forever, until the end of time. And You did this, not only to give us a memorial of Your death which is our salvation, but You did it also, to remain with us entirely, and forever.My soul, if you wish to penetrate the depths of this mystery, your gaze must be illumined by love! You need to see and understand! Contemplate the Last Supper: see Jesus who knows that He will soon be separated from the body of His humanity, and yet wishing to be united to us forever; contemplate the love by which He institutes this Sacrament which permits Him to be corporeally and forever united to mankind. O inextinguishable love! O love of Christ! O love of the human race! What a true furnace of love! O Jesus, You already saw the death which awaited You; the sorrows and atrocious tortures of the Passion were already breaking Your Heart, and yet You offered Yourself to Your executioners, and permitted them, by means of this Sacrament, to possess You forever as an eternal gift, O You, whose delights are to be with the children of men!O Eternal Father, we beg You to plunge each of us ever deeper and deeper into the love of Christ, who did not forget any of us in life or in death, but who willed to give Himself wholly to each of us, and to unite each of us to Himself forever. A lo largo del año litúrgico, hemos pasado, paso a paso, de la consideración de los misterios de la vida de Jesús a la contemplación de la Santísima Trinidad, cuya fiesta celebramos el domingo pasado. Jesús, nuestro Mediador, nuestro Camino, nos ha tomado de la mano y nos ha conducido a la Santísima Trinidad; y hoy parece como si los tres mismos Divinos quisieran llevarnos de regreso a Jesús, considerado en su Santísima Eucaristía. “Nadie viene al Padre sino por mí” (Juan 14,6), dijo Jesús, y añadió: “Nadie puede venir a mí si el Padre … no lo atrae” (ibid. 6,44). Este es el camino del alma cristiana: de Jesús al Padre, a la Santísima Trinidad; de la Santísima Trinidad, del Padre, a Jesús. Un cristiano no puede prescindir de Cristo; Él es, en el sentido más estricto de la palabra, nuestro Pontífice, el gran constructor de puentes que ha atravesado el abismo entre Dios y nosotros. Al final del tiempo pascual en el que conmemoramos los misterios del Salvador, la Iglesia, que como buena Madre sabe que nuestra vida espiritual no puede subsistir sin Jesús, nos conduce a Él, real y verdaderamente presente en el Santísimo Sacramento de el altar. La solemnidad del Corpus Domini no es solo el simple memorial de un hecho histórico que tuvo lugar hace más de dos mil años en la Última Cena; más bien, nos recuerda la realidad siempre presente de Jesús siempre viviendo entre nosotros. Podemos decir, en verdad, que no nos ha “dejado huérfanos”, sino que ha querido permanecer permanentemente con nosotros, en la integridad de Su Persona en la plenitud de Su humanidad y Su divinidad. “No hay otra nación tan grande”, canta con entusiasmo el Oficio Divino, “como para tener sus dioses tan cerca como nuestro Dios está presente para nosotros” (RB). En la Santísima Eucaristía, Jesús es realmente Emmanuel, Dios con nosotros.

¡Oh Dios, oh Creador, oh Espíritu de vida que abruma a tus criaturas con gracias siempre nuevas! Concede a tus elegidos el don siempre renovado: el Cuerpo y la Sangre, el Alma y la Divinidad de Jesucristo. Oh Jesús, Tú instituiste este Sacramento, no por el deseo de sacar algún provecho de él para Ti, sino únicamente movido por un amor que no tiene otra medida que la desmedida. Instituiste este Sacramento porque Tu amor excede todas las palabras. Quisiste entregarte a nosotros, ardiendo de amor por nosotros y tomaste tu morada en la Hostia consagrada, por completo y para siempre, hasta el fin de los tiempos. Hiciste esto, no solo para darnos un memorial de tu muerte, que es nuestra salvación, sino que también lo hiciste para permanecer con nosotros por completo y para siempre. Alma mía, si quieres penetrar en las profundidades de este misterio, ¡tu mirada debe estar iluminada por el amor! ¡Necesitas ver y entender! Contempla la Última Cena: mira a Jesús que sabe que pronto será separado del cuerpo de su humanidad y, sin embargo, desea estar unido a nosotros para siempre; contempla el amor con que instituye este sacramento que le permite estar corporal y eternamente unido a los hombres. ¡Oh amor inextinguible! ¡Oh amor de Cristo! ¡Oh amor de la raza humana! ¡Qué verdadero horno de amor!
