On this Thirteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time, two people reach out to touch Jesus with faith. The question for you and me is whether in our lives we humbly reach out to touch Jesus with the faith of Jairus and the woman with the 12 year hemorrhage — or do we just “bump into him,” like all those following in the crowd, who, even though they were coming into physical contact with him, were receiving none of his healing and transformative power.
When we come to Mass and approach to receive him in Holy Communion do we do so with faith, knowing that we’re touching far more than the hem of his garment, but receiving his whole body, blood, soul and divinity within? Do we recognize we’re receiving the same Jesus whose feet Jairus grasped? Or do we receive him routinely, without awe, without reverence, with hands or souls in need of cleansing?
Do we approach Jesus knowing he likewise wants to reach out and touch us, that just like he did with Jairus’ little girl, so he wants to lay his hands on us, as he does on the day we’re baptized, as he does in silence in the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, as he does through the raised hands of the priest giving God’s forgiveness in the Sacrament of Penance, whereby he who is the resurrection and the life wants us to share in his triumph over sin and death.
Do we allow him to transform us in such a way by our contact with him in prayer and in the Sacraments that we can in turn become the hands of his mystical body, burning with his desire to reach out and heal a wounded world in which so many are bleeding, in which so many, including kids, are dying physically and spiritually because they’re not in a life-changing relationship of faith with Him who is the Resurrection, the Way, the Truth and the Life?
Today as we prepare now to act on his words, “Do not fear, just believe,” and proclaim with fervor our Profession of Faith; as we get ready to fall on our knees before him as he enters not Jairus’ house, and not only this house of God, but enters under the roof of each of us and makes us a true temple, let us ask him for the grace to “arise!,” to be raised up to the fullness of life with him, both individually and as a family of faith, that filled with a contagious amazement like all those in Jairus’ house after the miracle, others, in seeing our awe, might hunger to follow us here to where Jesus wants to touch and change them, too. Jesus has indeed rescued us and will rescue us again. He loves us too much to leave us in the pit, hemorrhaging and dead. He’s reaching out to us now. Let us reach back and receive his grace never to leave his restorative embrace! Amen.

En este decimotercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario, dos personas se acercan para tocar a Jesús con fe. La pregunta es la siguiente, si en nuestras vidas nos acercamos humildemente para tocar a Jesús con la fe de Jairo y la mujer con la hemorragia de 12 años, o simplemente nos “topamos con él”, como todos los que lo siguen entre la multitud, quiénes, a pesar de estar en contacto físico con él, no reciben nada de su poder sanador y transformador.
Cuando venimos a Misa y nos acercamos para recibirlo en la Sagrada Comunión, ¿lo hacemos con fe, sabiendo que estamos tocando mucho más que el dobladillo de su vestimenta, recibiendo dentro todo su cuerpo, sangre, alma y divinidad ? ¿Reconocemos que estamos recibiendo al mismo Jesús a cuyos pies Jairo se arrodilló ? ¿O lo recibimos rutinariamente, sin admiración, sin reverencia, con manos o almas que necesitan limpieza?
¿Nos acercamos a Jesús sabiendo que quiere tendernos la mano y tocarnos, al igual que hizo con la niña de Jairo, que quiere poner sus manos sobre nosotros, como lo hizo el día en que nos bautizamos, como lo hace él en silencio en el Sacramento de la Unción de los Enfermos, como lo hace a través de las manos levantadas del sacerdote que da el perdón de Dios en el Sacramento de la Penitencia, donde el, que es la resurrección y la vida quiere que compartamos su triunfo sobre el pecado y muerte.
¿Permitimos que él nos transforme de tal manera por nuestro contacto con él en la oración y en los sacramentos y que a su vez podamos llegar a ser las manos de su cuerpo místico, ardiendo con su deseo de alcanzar y sanar un mundo herido en el que muchos sangran, en los que tantos, incluídos los niños, mueren física y espiritualmente porque no están en una relación de fe que cambie la vida con Él, que es la Resurrección, el Camino, la Verdad y la Vida ?
Hoy, mientras nos preparamos para actuar de acuerdo con sus palabras, “No temas, sólo cree” y proclama con fervor nuestra profesión de fe; mientras nos preparamos para arrodillarnos ante él cuando entra a la casa de Jairo, y no sólo a esta casa de Dios, sino que entra bajo el techo de cada uno de nosotros y nos hace un verdadero templo, pidamos su gracia para “¡surgir!” y ser levantado a la plenitud de la vida con él, tanto individualmente como una familia de fe que se llenó de un asombro contagioso, como de todos aquellos en la casa de Jairo después del milagro, y otros que al ver nuestro asombro, podrían tener hambre de seguirnos hasta donde Jesús quiere tocar y cambiarlos también. Jesús realmente nos ha rescatado y nos rescatará nuevamente. Él nos ama demasiado como para dejarnos en el pozo, con hemorragias y muerte. Él nos está alcanzando ahora. ¡Déjemonos alcanzar y recibir su gracia de nunca abandonar su abrazo restaurador! Amén.
